]]> Sat Sep 26 2009 D - Autumn 2009 DRS RHTTs http://fcwg.fotopic.net/c1775465.html There were lots of early rumours about what may have been turning up for this years programme, and in the end a real mixed bag of traction ended up at Stowmarket. We started the season with 20304, 20305, 37059, 37069, 37601, 37604, 57003, 57007, 66420 and 66426. 37059 didn't last long and was replaced by 20301 after a couple of weeks, so I'm glad I made the effort in the early days! I really must say a HUGE thanks to JAD for the RHTT stuff this year. He knows why... ]]> Mon Oct 12 2009 Chickens! http://fcwg.fotopic.net/c1766825.html This is something I'd wanted to do for a while, but we only got round to it this year. I shan't go into a rant about the conditions that chickens are kept in for commercial egg or meat production, but if you ever want to know some of the more unpleasant things that go on, there is plenty of information on the net. Once the girls get to about a year old they become less regular layers (ie not daily) and therefore, uneconomic from the farmers point of view. They are sent for slaughter and end up in pies, nuggets and pet food etc. Luckily, there is a small number of rescue organisations that take chickens from battery, barn or free-range farms for rehoming. We got 6 girls from Little Hen Rescue in Norfolk (one extra for a friend at work who lost one to illness), and it's one of the best things I've ever done. It's like having a chill-pill at the bottom of the garden. I could (and do) spend hours just watching them do all the chickeny things they've never done before, and the eggs are absolutely delicious. If you've ever wondered about getting chickens, I can't tell you how much of a difference they have made to me. I wouldn't be without them now. Thanks to Lucy at Wickes for all the advice and help, and convincing Candy that getting chickens was a good idea, and a HUGE hug and thanks to my wife Candy for putting up with me and the girls. I did quite a bit of research before I started building the house so had a rough idea of what I wanted and what the girls needed. Photo by Candy. I should have worn a hat to hide the ever-increasing bald spot... No I'm not 18ft tall, it's a REALLY small chair! The floor is down. Just the walls, roof and doors to go! Ramp done, and most of the walls on. We replanked one end of the garage! We did the other end last November under very trying circumstances... The front has been done too now. Could do with some new doors, but theres a hen house in the way now! :oP This is the walk in run that the girls are in for most of the day. Much easier for cleaning them out, and collecting the eggs. There is a 'low level' run too, about 3ftx3ftx8ft that the girls go into when we need the lawn mowed. Split level door gives me something to lean on when I'm hen-watching. All we're missing is the girls! Two bakery trays tied at each end. Thanks to Down The Lane boss Richard for the idea! Doris was the one I took to work on the train for Richard. The girls settled in really quickly, which surprised me. Bottom to top: Emily, Korma and Ada, Doris, Madras and Gladys Gladys is definitely bottom of the pecking order, but my favourite! Korma is a bit of a bossy one, but not the Madam! Likes worms. Madras is head of the escape committee... Ada is vocal, Boss Lady and one of the regular layers Emily is the other regular layer at the moment. Greedy and noisy too! A proper tin bath too! Emily was the first to discover the delights of a dust bath... 31st October is the day all five laid eggs for us. All different colours, but who laid which one? Nice to have eggs with a a 'laid date' rather than an expiry date!

]]> Thu Jan 1 1970 D - 40145 to Inverness http://fcwg.fotopic.net/c1751980.html The blisteringly early start (0440 ex Carlisle) was a bit of downer, and 57601 screeching away on the back end all the way to Inverness was tiresome but the thrash, MY GOD!!! 46 minutes and 23 seconds of continuous full power after departing Inverness on the return trip - you HAD to be there. I have never experienced such relentless thrash anywhere. This was the best ever, and NOTHING will beat it, and before anybody asks me, yes it WAS worth flagging 37670 to do it! The combination of a good mix of power, and the stunning scenery in the area mean I will definitely be going back again. Stratford built N7 69621 paid us a visit late April - early May 2009, and I was lucky enough to be about on two of its running days. One at Dereham doing a feew odds n ends on 20069 while Andy did some more of his excellent work overhauling the cab interior, and another visit purely to go linesiding. Sunday 3 May 2009: Finally we managed to get a GE steam loco on on the Mid Norfolk! ]]> Sun May 3 2009 D - 47370 goes away http://fcwg.fotopic.net/c1710684.html A few shots taken during May 2009 to record the passing of long time Ipswich 'gate guardian' 47370, which had stood in the same spot of 6 1/2 years, awaiting the call to the breakers yard. She was finally dragged off on the 25th May to Felixstowe, then taken by road to Thompsons of Stockton for scrapping. I couldn't believe it when the fitters actually cleaned the old girl before she went. Well done guys! Thanks to everyone who a) made it happen, and b) turned out in support of us. Heres to the next one! Having caught 37259 and 37605 at Ipswich and Westerfield, I carried on to Stowmarket with Jed to get 37087 and 37667. I had a few things to do after that, but still managed to get 37611 and 37069 at Hackney and Walthamstow before heading back to Ipswich for 259 and 605 going back to Willesden. I honestly can't remember when I last photographed SIX mainline 37s on the same day. It's a LONG LONG time ago! It hurt like hell that he wasn't with us today, but he would have loved every minute of it. D1015 (or D1032 as displayed on one side) performed perfectly as always, thanks to the efforts of the DTG. A somewhat pedestrian run via Seven Sisters, Cambridge and Thetford on the outward was more than compensated for by the blast up the GEML on the way back from Norwich. If I had to choose between the run off 'Oliver Cromwell' earlier this year, and the run behind D1015, it would be a tough one... Saturday 20 December 2008: What can I say? An inventive, sometimes ingenious engineer and a fine Railwayman who will be sorely missed by everybody who ever had the pleasure of knowing him. Chris was probably the only reason we bought the 20 in the first place, which he saw as a stepping stone to us getting a 37, which we did a few years later. Without his patience, sense of humour, and virtually unparalleled knowledge of locomotive mechanical and electrical workings we wouldn't have bothered. Lets see what 2009 brings... For me, whatever it is, it'll be better than 2008. We had the pleasure of attending the Nene Valley Railways diesel gala which took place on 3rd-5th October. While the loco was away, we took the opportunity to turn the 20 on the turntable at Wansford, mainly to start to even out any odd tyre wear that we may have accumulated over the past 16 years, and also to allow me to get some different photos of the old girl now and again! I was only att he NVR on the Friday but enjoyed what little time I had there... Apart from when the 31 bolted on, denying me my turn at thrashing the nuts off the 20 through the tunnel! Next time we go anywhere with the 20, it had better NOT be my wedding anniversary weekend... The next weekend we were graced with the presence of 73136, which arrived with our new resident machine, 73210, which looks particularly fine in its fresh coat of InterCity livery. Despite being the lowest powered and quietest 'mainline' loco on the line, I'm quite looking forward to properly acquainting myself with it. The run down in the morning was a cracker for the most part thanks to some late running service trains which meant we didn't get put away for anything before our booked water stop at Colchester. The run from there to Haughley was 'pedestrian' thanks to a number of trains all trying to get through Ipswich in the same direction at the same time, but despite that we were only 1' late arriving at Norwich. The return trip was beyond all my expectations. 'Oliver Cromwell' was worked hard, and provided all the steam, and more, that the driver wanted. High point for me though was Manningtree. Eased a bit over the bridges, once we got to the level crossing the regulator was WIDE open, and that beautiful chime whistle was being used to full effect. Anybody on the platform who didn't have the hairs on the back of their neck standing up didn't deserve to be there, and were probably dead from the heart upwards... This trip up the GEML comes second only to the frenzied fling on the last Class 86 tour by Bob Batt a few years ago, but for sheer enjoyment of what the real railway was all about, this was it. If you ever get the chance to ride behind this beautiful, impressive and inspiring machine, do it. I don't think I'll enjoy anything on rails as much as this, ever again. There was a faint rainbbow above Oliver Cromwell while we were at Colchester, but the exposure was too tough for me to deal with... Sheer indifference! Some people don't know they're born do they...? The fire looks in good health, and I'll bet the teacan got nearly as much hammer as 'Ollie' did! One of the most beautiful, impressive and inspiring machines I have ever ridden on or behind, without exception.

Thanks to this one running via Charing Cross, I've now been hauled by Class 37s in, and out, of all the London termini that 37s can go to. As well as Charing Cross it did Uckfield and East Grinstead, along with London Bridge, Victoria, Blackfriars and Gordon Hill before ending up at Kings Cross. I had permission to be where I was and rest assured, that anybody there who shouldn't be, will be dealt with by the police. Then on to Pudding Mill Lane for 60010, then Stratford for 31190 and 106, but I sailed too close to the wind and only managed a going away shot of 106 (it was THAT close!)... ]]> Tue Jan 1 2008 D - D1015 to Milford Haven http://fcwg.fotopic.net/c1397570.html I hadn't done 1015 since its' first tour back in 2002, so it was about time I had another go. I'd been hanging on for something that wasn't too much of an endurance test, and went somewhere I hadn't been for a while, so when a straight out and back trip from Paddington to Milford Haven came up, that was the one. At the back all the way there was fairly tedious, but the trip back more than made up for it! Its a really tough call between 1015 and 40145 as to which is my favourite preserved mainline loco, but having said that, I haven't had 55022 since Martin Walker got it going again... Saturday 27 October 2007: I hadn't done 1015 since its' first tour back in 2002, so it was about time I had another go. Circuits were broadly similar to last year, but the missing bridge at Ely meant some obvious alterations to the plan! Locos used so far include 20306, 20307, 20308, 20310, 20311, 20312, 20313, 20314, 20315, 37038, 37601, 37603, 37667, 57009 and 57011. Pictures 10-18 and 73-88 were taken with the permission of DRS - Stowmarket depot is a working depot and just like any other is private property. Statin' the bleedin' obvious! Turned out nice again! Not long after, 011 went bang Taking no prisoners! The less glamorous side of RHTTs. We could have turned round at Shenfield, but Liv St weren't really on the ball and we went to Ilford and back for no reason! Its a VERY dark place with no lights, but it really is Braintree at 02.30! Nearly done Tim! Not sure how long 038 will last. Load regulator is a bit odd, and the foot of flames out the top every time you open it up are a cause for concern!

Unfortunately, circumstances meant that we had 57601 back as far as Craigendoran Jct, where the 40 ran round and replaced the awful, staggering pile of shite we'd had to put up with. Once the premier power was back where we'd paid for it to be, it was absolutely hellfire. Under Glasgow was unbelievable, but the highlight for me was the G&SW at night, full moon, full thrash... Now that WAS good :o) Oh, did I mention that 57601 is absolute rubbish? 1Q18 was held on the Up Main and trains ran via the Up Loop at Witham due to the non-availability of Marks Tey loop for recessing 1Q18. A little further down the the line this train, the 10.55 Liv St - Southend was involved in a fatality... Never mind the problems this caused on the day, my thoughts and symapthy go to all involved. Of all the places for the 10.00 Norwich - Liv St - to overtake 1Q18, it had to be under the shopping centre at Ilford! Doh! You can see the 360 that bowled me out for the shot of 606 coming towards Liv St... Is that you John? ;o) Another bit of self regulation by the driver! Taking it very easy up the bank to let the Southend get away. Thanks Phil ;o) After the Southend was clear, full thrash was applied, and enjoyed! Pudding Mill Lane may be good for pics, but it is TOO easy to get bowled out by passing trains. Again, some self regulation helped. the 315 got away, then 1Q18 was blasted off to get ahead of a DLR train! Nearly bowled by the 321 on the Up Main too...

Stunning! 31438 is rapidly becoming my favourite loco to drive, but thats probably only because its so long since I drove the 20 ;) Looking a bit better for a clean isn't she? It's been 31438 for a long time, but now its official! Seven locos in a line? During a shunt on the Wednesday before the gala, all eight locos on site were shunted at the same time by 31438. That must have been a sight to see (and hear!)... During the cleaning of the 20, one of the bits that was cleaned off was the moose on the solebar. Now we've got a proper one. Thanks Mickey! This isn't really a 'before' pic, more like a 1/2 way there! This one is the 'after' pic, and doesn't it look smart? This is the first passenger train that 47596 worked at the MNR. I had the honour of being the handle puller. Seen here after arriving at Wymondham Abbey. The sun was a bit too far round by the time the second train left, but never mind, there will be other chances. Wheres all the junk gone???!!! Obligatory 'portrait' shot in Wymondham Abbey Loop. Go on Rod, all the way round mate! And my obligatory 'top of the peg' shot at Dereham. The sun was just wrong for this one, confusing the hell out of my light-meter!

This one went from Paddington to St Pancras, and took in Ardingly, Victoria, Blackfriars, Orpington, Cannon Street, Hayes, London Bridge and Waterloo on the way. I thought I'd be going barmy by the end of the day, but I actually quite enjoyed it. Front bay behind 37410 helped though :o)

It started off with a quote of 8 class 20s and 2 class 37s working off Stowmarket. What we got was 10 class 20s (20306 to 20315 inclusive) and no fewer than 5 37s (038/059/194/218 and 229). I didn't get pictures of all the locos involved as some were only here for a few days (20314/315 and 37194/229). DRS 37259 enters the long cutting South of Thuxton on the 10.00 ex Dereham on Saturday morning. We heard this coming. Actually, we heard it leave Wymondham Abbey. This is Danemoor bank, at Milepost 4! We really did hear it that far, and I'd forgotten how good it was... 37259 is still wide open as she storms up the hill on the 11.00 from Wymondham Abbey. STILL wide! Sounded absolutely thrashtastic mate! Thuxton again, for the 12.00 ex Dereham. Mind yer head Kev! Owen makes full use of 31438s 1470hp coming off the 10mph slack at Crownthorpe on the 13.00 from Wymondham Abbey. Hellfire Corner, on the approach to Sewage Farm Bridge. I think Hellfire Corner sounds nicer don't you? Hellfire Corner again, on the 14.00 ex Dereham. Have to see if load 5 will fit in front of the trees. Leaving Wymondham Abbey on the 15.00 away. Paul had been primed for where we were, and that made it better :o) Wymondhams very own 'twin towers'. I think this is the only place where you can get a decent linseide shot with the Abbey in the background. Best keep an eye on the vegetation! Mr Hallett takes no prisoners on the 16.00 ex Dereham, except maybe '50031' in the secondmans seat! This was spot on! We primed the gatekeeper at Garveston to be a bit slow on the gates to check the train down, enforcing thrash. It worked perfectly! By now I was grinning a bit... Spine tingling, it really was... By now it was all I could do not to drop the camera and just bellow my stumps off... Very VERY rude! I think the crew enjoyed it too :o) 259 runs into Wymondham Abbey prior to working the Fish and Chip special, 19.00 ex Wymondham Abbey - delayed waiting Fish and Chips! Waiting for the chips. The view of 259 from 31438. Had we got away on time, there would have been some shots like this with a sunset instead of washed out, over exposed sky... I'm amazed that this came out. balancing the camera on top of a traffic cone! This after 3 hours in the Mustard Pot at Whinburgh. At this very moment, one of our gallant band was falling asleep in a bus shelter at Yaxham having flagged the taxi in the vain hope of 'extras' at the pub!!! A pretty fine collection of power. Work on the pit progresses well. Concrete due to be poured on Monday 25th September. 259 in the loop at Wymondham Abbey with the 12.00 ex Dereham. Even lucky with the weather on Sunday! 259 moves off the stock to run round. 259 drops back into Wymondham Abbey before working the 13.00 back to Dereham. 50019 worked the 14.00 due to a water leak on 31438. Mr Hallett again, glad I took two pics, the other one shows the driver bellowing, but none of the passengers! 259 shatters the peace of a Sunday afternoon, arriving back at Dereham on the 15.00 from Wymondham Abbey. 31438 was fixed in time to take over on the last trip of the weekend, seen here being attached to the train. They do look good together don't they? 259 sunbathing! 50019 brings up the rear of the 15.00 from Wymondham. I used to take loads of daft pics like this, but nearly always forgot which loco I took the photo of! PS - Don't try this at home! 259 drops into the station to work the 16.00 away. Dreadful! It was a good couple of days.

My big telephoto lens (Canon 100-400L) makes the climb out of Colchester look steeper than it is, but 608 and 609 are making light work of it despite all the clag...

Locos in use were 20069, 31438 and 50019 along with the resident 3 car Metro-Cammell DMU. I had the pleasure of driving 50019 on the Saturday and 20069 on the Sunday. Tuesday 18 July 2006: Two days of loco and coaches on the MNR to celebrate the launch itno traffic of the 'blue and grey' set of air braked Mark 2 coaches. Locos in use were 20069, 31438 and 50019 along with the resident 3 car Metro-Cammell DMU. I had the pleasure of driving 50019 on the Saturday and 20069 on the Sunday.

56040 stabled at Dereham. It'll be out later :o) L836 seen arriving at Dereham on the 10.10 ex Wymondham Abbey. 31438 leaving Dereham with the 11.00 to Wymondham Abbey. 50019 at Kimberley Park on the slightly early running 13.00 Dereham - Wymondham Abbey. With just 3 coaches on it took about 30 seconds to reach the linespeed of 25mph... The 13.00 ex Dereham is seen at Wymondham Abbey loop before 50019 was run-round. 20069 leaving Dereham on the 15.00 to Wymondham Abbey. 31438 brings up the rear of the 15.00 to Wymondham Abbey. Looking just like a Barnstaple drag, 50019 sits atop L836 on the MoD road. The one that didn't quite make it. Despite herculean efforts by the restoration team, there just weren't enough hands, or hours in the day to get 5255 ready. 20069 and 31438 arrive back at Dereham with the 16.00 ex Wymondham Abbey, while 31235 looks on. 20069 is uncoupled and shunted to simplify operations later in the day. 31438 runs into Dereham station with the 16.00 ex Wymondham Abbey. The view back towards Wymondham Abbey from 31438. 31438 at Garvestone waiting for Ted Fuller to rejoin the train after doing the gates for us. Thanks Ted! Early on the Sunday morning, 31438 contemplates what is to come later in the day (not all that much really!). Mr Hallett at the helm, 50019 leaves Dereham with the 10.00 to Wymondham Abbey. Two blue Mk2s! 5497 on the rear of the 3 coach set, sits next to 5255 on the MoD road. Nose first 20069 waits to leave Dereham with the 14.00 to Wymondham Abbey. Yours truly had the pleasure of being handle-puller for that trip. 20069 waits at Kimberley Park to Mr Poll to get the gates for us. Good on yer Chiefy! 20069 waits to run round after arriving with the 14.00 ex Dereham. A slightly better angle shows the blue and greys off to good effect. After running round its train, 20069 is attached and multied up to 31438 for the run back to Dereham on the 15.00 from Wymondham Abbey. Once back at Dereham a series of shunt moves took place to get all the bits and pieces back where they were needed. This is 20069 and 31235 along with the MLV and crane on the MoD road at Dereham. Finally, the sun gets round far enough for a full on shot of 'Oystermouth'. I can't wait... :o)

321363 arriving at Romford. Note the nice shiny new pantograph. The old one was ripped off at Witham along with the ones on top of 321325 and 321354 on the 16.00 Harwich Town - Liverpool Street a few days previously. I was on late turn... :o( 357016 pauses at Pitsea with a Fenchurch Street to Southend Central service. 37605 leans into the junction at Pitsea on 1Z18. 37609 was at the rear. Shame the sun went in before the train got to where I was. Would have been a cracker! 357201 arriving at Grays with a terminating service from Fenchurch Street. 66130 passing Grays. 37609 leads 1Z19 through Grays. 37605 bringing up the rear of 1Z19 at Grays. In one steady movement, advance the power controller from 20 to 90 degrees.... 37605 is given strict instructions as to what to do! Most of Ockendon heard 1Z19. Sometimes I wish I still did video... 1Z19 charging through Ockendon. I didn't know the linespeed was that high through the platform! 37609 bringing up the rear of the test train. Thanks to the service across the Upminster - Grays section, I stayed at Ockendon for the return of the test train. 37609 seen arriving in the loop platform at Ockendon. Waiting to cross a c2c service at Ockendon. About time too! 37609 waits for the single line to Grays, while I wait for the sun! 315818 and 315826 approaching Chadwell Heath with a Metro service. I had planned to wait here for 1Z19 but time and poor light got the better of me. 66572 passing Chadwell Heath with 4M93. 90013 passing Chadwell Heath with an Up Norwich service. Bin for bin! Two of Ilfords finest passing at speed between Chadwell Heath and Goodmayes. Finally, a couple of un-refurbished 315s pass on the Electric lines south of Chadwell Heath. I gave up after this and went for beers (well it was Thursday)...

Wednesday 4 January 2006: Unfortunately, I'm not old enough to have any decent phots of these legendary machines in 'proper' service. However, with 55022s exploits a few years ago I have got a few of that along with some of the other preserved machines.

This collection will grow bit by bit, but don't expect many pictures after 9th December 2005 when the last 'regular' RM route in London (159) went plastic... RM RIP!
